My name is Michael Pearson, Jr. ... a born and bred Southwestern Indiana Hoosier.

I am also the self-proclaimed Speedway Guru. I absolutely possess no professional auto racing credentials whatsoever other than a diehard race fan's passion for dirty, nasty speed!

The Speedway Zone gives me the opportunity to share my passion for auto racing with the global community of diehard race fans.

My journey to becoming the self-anointed Speedway Guru started when I was young ...

I can remember as a kid hanging out in my Daddy's garage while he was working on his car, drinking good ole' Pabst Blue Ribbon and the Indianapolis 500 being broadcasted on the radio.

Back then, the same as today, the Indianapolis 500 was blocked from regular viewing during the race.

Since in those days you couldn't even watch the live broadcast on the Internet - because computers themselves didn't exist in the mainstream market at that time - the only way you could get live coverage of the Indy 500 was by listening to the radio broadcast.

I remember the names of two Indianapolis 500 racing legends ... Mario Andretti and A.J. Foyt.

Admittedly, as a kid, I did not truly understand what was going on but I knew this ... the announcer on the radio made the race sound like the greatest sporting event in the world.

Aside from the enthusiasm of the announcer, I'm sure the excitement I felt as a kid listening to the Indianapolis 500 had a lot to do with the enthusiasm of my Daddy and my Uncles talking about Mario and A.J.

I didn't truly understand what auto racing was really about back then but as far as I knew it was something big that happened once a year during the month of May.

Over the years, since those wonderful childhood memories of hanging out in the garage with my Daddy and listening to the Indianapolis 500 on the radio, my relationship with auto racing has been one of childish fascination to total ignorance to full-blown fanaticism.

Many of my college friends who knew me as one of those morons who called NASCAR ... Neck Car ... today are amazed at my love for the sport of auto racing. How did this transformation happen?
