Lowes Motor Speedway ... The Home Base of NASCAR

Lowes Motor Speedway sits twenty minutes northeast of Charlotte in Concord, North Carolina.

The speedway holds the mantle of being NASCAR's home base with ninety percent of the major team's headquarters sitting within a 50 mile range of the speedway.

Formerly known as the Charlotte Motor Speedway - the supporting actor in some of Hollywood's greatest racing movies - the naming rights to the speedway were purchased by home improvement retailer Lowe's in February 1999.

Hence, the name of the speedway was changed to Lowes Motor Speedway.

With this historical event, the speedway goes down in NASCAR history as the first race track in the country with a corporate sponsor's name and, consequently, paved the way for the corporate sponsorship that we see at NASCAR tracks today.

Track History and Facts

Along with being the first speedway in the sport to take on the name of a corporate sponsor, the Lowes Motor Speedway also made history in 1992 as the first speedway in the Modern Era of NASCAR to host night-time racing.

Technically, the Lowe's Motor Speedway is a 1.5-mile long quad-oval intermediate track that also features:

  • Seating capacity up to 167,000 people, with an in-field capacity that allows for an additional 50,000 spectators.
  • A 2.25-mile road course and a 0.6-mile kart course within the in-field.
  • A quarter-mile oval using part of the front stretch and pit road.
  • A 0.2-mile oval outside turn three.

Coca-Cola 600 ... A Crown Jewel of NASCAR

The Coca-Cola 600 is considered one of the top five annual NASCAR races and, as such, carries the honor of being named a “Crown Jewel of NASCAR”.

The first race was launched at the Lowes Motor Speedway on Memorial Day weekend 1960 as a holiday racing event that would rival the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing”, the open-wheel Indianapolis 500.

With taking 400 laps to complete the 600 miles long race, the Coca-Cola 600 is without a doubt the longest event on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule.

Feel The Thrill Tour ... Experience The Speedway

If you would like to experience first hand the rich traditions and history of the Coca-Cola 600 and the speedway itself, you can experience a guided exploration of the speedway anytime throughout the year.

Called the Feel The Thrill Tour, here are just some of the things you’ll see for yourself on this exciting half-hour racing safari:

  • Close up looks at speedway areas that race fans do not have access to on race days
  • The opportunity to travel down pit road and to take a picture of yourself in Victory Lane
  • A van ride around the speedway where you get the experience of feeling the awesome force of the track’s 24 degree banking.
