Talladega Superspeedway ... NASCAR's Most Competitive Track

Talladega Superspeedway ... reverently dubbed by fans and drivers as "The Dega" ... is without a doubt NASCAR's largest, fastest and most competitive racetrack.

Here's the details of the layout of this 2.66-miles long tri-oval track ...

  • four lanes wide,
  • 33 degrees banking on the North and South turns,
  • 16.5 degree banking in the grandstands tri-oval,
  • a 4,300 feet long front stretch, and
  • a nearly 4,000 feet long backstretch.

With the way this track was built, it's no wonder that drivers reach record-setting speeds in excess of 220 mph on this superspeedway and, as a result, race fans get to witness some of the most exciting competitions ever seen in NASCAR history.

The Big One ... The Mother of All Multi-Car Crashes

At the "Dega",, it is not uncommon for race fans to witness "The Big One" - a multi-car accident involving 20 or more stock cars.

Because of the tight quarters on the North and South turns and the steep banking of the track, racing is very tight and just the slightest mistake by any driver can set off a chain reaction that culminates into the Mother of All Multi-Car Crashes ...

The Big One.

The odds that you will witness this multi-car pileup at the Talladega Superspeedway are so great that it would actually be a rare occurrence if you did not see The Big One happen.

As you could imagine, The Big One is a major concern for all drivers when it happens not only because of the extensive damage that is guaranteed to happen to the cars but also because of the negative impact it can have on a driver's standing in the battle for points.

Check out this clip of The Big One that happened at Talladega Superspeedway during the 2002 Aaron's 312:
